Art Ross Trophy

Drummondville Quebec’s MARCEL DIONNE enjoyed a stellar 18-year career in the NHL, shared between the Detroit Red Wings (4 years), the L.A.Kings (11 years) and the New York Rangers (2 years). With 8 100+ point seasons, DIONNE was consistently in the top ten in scoring. But 1979-80 was the sole season to win the scoring championship, and the sniper won it by the skin of his teeth. As the final buzzer went to end the regular season, both DIONNE and rookie WAYNE GRETZKY were tied with 137 points. MARCEL was awarded the ART ROSS TROPHY because he had scored more goals than the young Edmonton Oiler star, potting 53 to Gretzky’s 51. In 1980, MARCEL DIONNE earned the NHLPA’s most valuable player trophy (the Lester B. Pearson Award (Gretzky grabbed the Hart)), and was selected as a First Team All-Star.
